The Search For A Diabetes Cure Will Always Continue...

It’s probably true to say that most patients who have been diagnosed with diabetes today, hope that medical researchers will someday find the perfect diabetes cure. In their advertising some companies claim to already have the solution inside their diabetes remedies. Other people proclaim the effectiveness of herbs, homeopathy or acupuncture as a potential cure. Isn't this just baloney? Is there really potential for a genuine diabetes cure? This article will explain the most promising treatments that exist at present time.

1. The search for "natural" cures for diabetes...
Outside the developed West, most countries still rely on natural and herbal medicine to treat ailments that are treated in hospitals in countries such as the United Sates. Many of the herbs used in promised natural cures for diabetes originate from these countries. And certain herbs have shown qualities that Western drugs do not have – for example Gymnema sylvestre causes islet cell healing with a resumption of insulin secretion in pancreatic cells. Bilberry extract has been shown to reverse capillary damage in the eye and thus improve diabetic retinopathy. Both of these things are something that no Western drug can do. Yet, doctors are unconvinced that herbal remedies are appropriate treatments for diabetes. And clinical evidence has yet to show that there are real herbal cures for diabetes that will be 100% effective in treating Type 1 and Type 2.

The most common herb used for diabetes is bitter gourd in any form. Some consume bitter gourd as salads, or mixed with other vegetables as a sumptuous meal. Others prefer to take it as a bitter gourd extract, believing that it is more effective in treating their illness. However, there is as yet no conclusive proof that treating diabetes with bitter gourd alone is enough to rid anyone of his diabetes.

2. Pancreas transplant
Those with Type 1 diabetes and who also have pancreatic problems and abnormal kidney function can opt for a pancreas transplant. This is major surgery which requires the transfer of a perfectly healthy pancreas to possibly rid the patient of his insulin dependence. The donor pancreas usually comes from a person who is already brain-dead but is still alive using a life support system. However, this surgery is often done along with a kidney transplant so a person who undergoes this diabetes cure is faced not only with the existing diabetes but also the risk of pancreatic and kidney problems. This is however not recommended for diabetics who have heart disease, lung disease, or other life threatening and serious illnesses.

3. Islet cell transplant
This known treatment for diabetes requires the transplantation of beta cells that produces insulin, from a person’s pancreas (the donor) to that of the diabetic (patient). If successful, this procedure can greatly improve a diabetic’s health and way of life. The transplanted cells can now produce and regulate the insulin production of a diabetic. Among its benefits are:

  • Inherent monitoring of blood glucose by the islet cell transplant
  • Lessens if not completely rids the insulin dependence of the diabetic
  • Lessens the occurrence of complications that may arise from diabetes like kidney and heart problems.

While there is no perfect diabetes cure yet, there are many treatment options and remedies which can effectively control the disease greatly reduce the risk of complications. And, as stated above, while there are certain procedures that may give a ‘cure’, each of these comes with a corresponding risk.
