Those green-shaped cucumber-looking vegetable or fruit called bitter melon may look unpalatable. This is true for most people who shirk at the idea of eating them because bitter melon does leave a bitter taste in the mouth. But the fruit, which is also known as Karela or Momordica Charantia and mostly grows in tropical countries, has been known to have medicinal properties.

Bitter melon is very rich in iron and beta carotene. It also contains twice the amount of calcium, potassium and Vitamin C, as compared to more popular and preferred fruits and vegetables.

Scientific studies have proven that the juice extracted from bitter melon results to an effective blood-sugar level reducing action, making it an effective herbal treatment for diabetes. The test was done for both animals and humans. Western medicine has also proven that bitter melon contains insulin and 32 other active vitamins and minerals such as: lutein, lycopene, citrulline, GABA, vitamin B components and zeaxanthin.

Traditionally, the people living in the tropical regions like India and South America have long discovered bitter melon’s medicinal value. In these regions, the both the vegetable and its fruit are used in treating many medical conditions. Its ripened fruit has been reputed to have anti-cancer benefits and its leaves and seeds are used for making tea in order to cure other types of ailments. Its medicinal value is also reported to help in lowering blood cholesterol and blood sugar. Hence, many now endorse this as an alternative medicine in treating diabetes.

In the Philippines for instance, the Department of Health has approved herbal medicines that contain bitter melon properties for maintenance of diabetic patients. Clinical studies conducted in this region have proven its effectiveness and have also allowed scientists to identify three vital components that may be credited to the benefits of taking bitter melon medicines:

  • Bitter melon contains charantin and steroids compound that is proven to be very effective than any other hypoglycaemic medicine. Therefore it helps reduce blood sugar.
  • Bitter melon contains polypeptide P and alkaloids compound which acts like insulin that equalizes or lowers blood sugar.
  • Bitter melon contains oleanolic acid glycosides, which is good for non-absorption of high levels of sugar into the intestines.

You can boil the fruit or mix them in your dishes. You can prepare bitter melon tea or drink bitter melon capsules but regardless of how the fruit is taken, its effectiveness is consistent.

Below is a remedy you can prepare at home: Using bitter melon leaves, you can wash and chop these thinly and finely and then measure six tablespoon’s worth, put in a pan and add at least two glasses of water. Bring to boil for about fifteen minutes, but leave the pot uncovered. Once it is cooled, transfer to a container or put in the refrigerator. Drink at least a third of a cup of this mixture daily.

It is good to take note though that bitter melon, in whatever form, must not be taken to replace other health medications you need as a diabetic. Bitter melon must only be treated as a supplement, and not the fundamental solution to diabetes cure.
