Discovering The True Causes Of Diabetes

True or False: “One of the causes of diabetes is the propensity to eat sweets”? This statement is actually false and a result of lack of education and access to proper information on what really causes diabetes.

There are a number of postulated causes of diabetes but scientists are united in believing that its main cause is the body’s failure to produce enough of the insulin hormone, due to factors we will mention shortly, or possibly that the body develops a resistance to insulin, again due to aggravating factors. Studies showed that Type 1 diabetes is caused by the decreased insulin production and that Type 2 diabetes is brought about by the insulin resistance in peripheral tissues. The other type is known as juvenile diabetes which among other things has been linked to a lack of vitamin D.

Heredity is a major cause of diabetes especially in Type 2. If both parents have Type 2 diabetes, there is a reasonable chance that nearly all of their children will have diabetes. If both parents have Type 1 diabetes, fewer than 20 percent of their children will develop Type 1 diabetes. In identical twins, if one twin develops Type 2 diabetes, the chance is nearly 100 percent that the other twin will also develop it.

In Type 1 diabetes, however, only 40 to 50 percent of the second twins will develop the disease, indicating that while inheritance is important there are other factors that can cause diabetes as well such as:

  • Infection
  • Stress
  • Exposure to toxic chemicals
  • Obesity
  • Age
  • Lack of proper physical activity
  • Pregnancy

Most scientists believe that you must be born predisposed to this disease. In other words, your body is more susceptible because of the genetic make-up of your ancestors. If your parents, grandparents, or siblings have diabetes you are at greater risk.

A fatty diet is another major factor of diabetes. A team found out that insulin production can be disrupted by destroying a single gene that controls production of a key enzyme known as GnT-4a. They then concluded that high fat diet suppresses the same activity of the same gene. The inability to control glucose levels could eventually lead to full-blown type 2 diabetes.

In children, many researchers believe that lack of exercise and poor diet play a big part in the onset of Type 2 diabetes. However the causes of type 1 diabetes in children are not known. Evidence suggests that major causes of it are faulty genes and environmental factors.

Also, children who have diabetes were observed to have lived longer than people who get diabetes in later life. It is speculated that this is because they get into a routine of controlling their diabetes with regular injections and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Parents of children with diabetes should look out for the signs of low blood glucose levels and always have access to glucose or sweets. Additional regular checkups for kidney and eye problems are recommended to be scheduled as these are the two areas most affected by diabetes.
