How Diabetes Testing Could Protect Your Health
|
There are millions of people who go about their lives from day to day without any idea that there is a dangerous disease that could potentially inflict harm to organs in their body. This disease causes the blood sugar to rise at levels that can easily affect other organs like the heart (stroke and complications), the eyes (blindness) and the kidneys (kidney failure). The diseases may also result to amputation, if the condition has become severe. In the United States, this disease is one of the leading causes of death among Americans. This disease is of course, is known as diabetes and everyone who belongs to a high risk group should regularly go for diabetes testing. Most people do not actually recognize that they are sick with, and require treatment for diabetes. The symptoms, if at all any, slowly develop that some may easily attribute these to stress, aging and overworking. Some symptoms, such as getting up more than the usual times at night to urinate or a sudden change in your vision, may be non-specific but are already very suggestive. Feeling tired and fatigued most of the day may also already suggest that the disease is starting to develop. Men with an over 40 inch waistline and women with about 35 inches are already showing high risk factors, particularly when there is a history of diabetes in the family. These symptoms and circumstances must not be disregarded. If you are already feeling these symptoms then it is time to go for diabetes testing. When an adult is obese and starts feeling these symptoms, chances are he or she is already developing Type 2 diabetes. The simplest test one must undergo is blood or plasma glucose testing. With this process, a person will be required to fast for about eight hours before a reading is taken. Another test that may be administered is the glucose tolerance test. With this, the patient will be asked to drink a glucose solution which will be tested two hours after that. When the test indicates readings of glucose of about 126 milligrams per 1/10 liter of blood, this indicates that the person has developed diabetes. A below 100 reading is still normal. People whose results reflect over 100-120 are called borderline diabetics or pre-diabetic and will now need to undergo yearly diabetic testing to monitor that the disease does not progress. Those who have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic will also be advised to exercise and lose weight. Some may be prescribed with a medicine, like metformin, to facilitate lowering of blood sugar. Regular blood pressure and cholesterol level check-ups will also be required from a pre-diabetic. Studies have indicated that pre-diabetics who have done just what the doctor has ordered --- lose weight, exercise, and regular check-ups --- have decreased their risk of developing the condition. Recently, a new genetic testing method has helped doctors identify those people with increased risks of acquiring or developing diabetes, even without the significant symptoms. This genetic test, DeCode Genetics, also helps people realize and see early on, the importance of good exercise and a healthy body weight, in order to avoid developing Type2 diabetes. Early prevention does help a lot with this condition. |
