The Numerous Consequences Of Insulin Resistance
|
Insulin resistance occurs when the normal amount of insulin secreted by the pancreas is not able to unlock the door to the cells as they attempt to receive glucose. So, to maintain normal tissue or cell glucose, the pancreas secretes additional insulin. In some cases (about 1/3 of the people with insulin resistance), when the body cells resist or do not respond to even high levels of insulin, glucose builds up in the blood resulting in high blood glucose or type 2 diabetes. Even people with diabetes who take oral medication or require insulin injections to control their blood glucose levels can have higher than normal blood insulin levels due to insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is becoming rampant in a world filled with obese and physically inactive individuals in whom a normal amount of insulin cannot unlock the door to cells. As the body cells refuse to respond to high level of insulin causing blood glucose to build up it increasingly result in Type 2 diabetes. It is believed that all people having type 2 diabetes mellitus and many of those with hypertension, cardiovascular disease and obesity are insulin resistant. Diabetes researchers have linked insulin resistance to pre-diabetes such that the muscle, fat and liver cells of an insulin resistant do not use insulin properly. It usually results to high levels of blood glucose and high levels of insulin circulating in the blood. People having these symptoms are considered as in the “pre-diabetes” range. Pre-diabetes has also become a common disease all over the globe. Pre-diabetics have a high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes - sometimes called non-insulin diabetes. Studies revealed that most pre-diabetics develop type 2 diabetes within ten years unless they lose five to seven percent of their body weight by maintaining a balanced diet and regular physical activity. Prediabetes happens slowly and insidiously. Cells gradually become resistant to insulin, which is produced in the body to process glucose levels that rise in the blood after a meal. Insulin can open up a cell's outer membrane like a key in a door lock and set in motion the machinery that feeds the cell glucose, which is converted to energy. The human body works best when the supply of fuel equals the exact energy needs of its cells. Other consequence of insulin resistance is polycystic ovary disease or that causes infertility, menstrual irregularity, and androgen excess. Rare conditions like Lipodystrophic states or fatty liver is associated to insulin resistance along with Leprechaunism or growth retardation, abnormal glucose homeostatis, or early death. Later after linking insulin resistance to diabetes, researchers then focused on its possible link to obesity, hypertension, and coronary heart disease. A study made by Gerald Reaven claimed that insulin resistance or what he coined “Syndrome X” sets the stage for a more serious disease such as coronary heart problem. The said syndrome is composed of certain traits such as glucose intolerance, abnormal high insulin levels, high triglycerides, and low high-density lipoprotein. It turned out that insulin resistance is the common feature of Syndrome X. People with metabolic syndrome are twice as likely to die from, and 3 times as likely to have, a myocardial infarction or stroke compared with people without the syndrome. Recently, researchers have found alarming links between diabetes and neurodegenerative afflictions such as Alzheimer's disease. Diabetes and insulin resistance may cause depression, decreased cognitive function, and harmful alterations in brain structure. These diseases and conditions are predominantly found in countries with an improved economic status such as the U.S. And in the U.S., these diseases and conditions are among the leading contributors to morbidity and mortality. Also, about 20-25% of the healthy population may be insulin resistant. |
