Type 2 Diabetes Exercise Tips

Life today is made more complicated by the things that supposedly should make life easier. The popularity of computers and electronic gadgets has removed certain inconveniences but man’s propensity for these gadgets has lead to health deterioration. Among the effects of man’s failure to move around physically is obesity which can then lead to diabetes. A man who develops a certain type of diabetes may be required to take a 360 degree turn in his life, stop sitting down in front of his monitor all day, and start a Type 2 diabetes exercise program.

Blame it on technology but most of man’s activities are now reliant on these electronic gadgets that encourage him to be very inactive. Man has deprived himself of a proper physical fitness regimen which has led to his downfall health wise.

Everyone, whether they are sick or not, will benefit from good physical activity. By exercising regularly, the muscles will need more energy to burn. The energy is in a form of glucose which should easily flow into the bloodstream when you do your jogging, sit ups or just brisk walking. A person with Type 2 diabetes is most likely beyond his or her ideal weight. Exercise is a vital process in order for him to manage his diabetes.

On top of that, to be physically fit brings many benefits to the body such as:

  • Better condition of other organs like the heart and lungs
  • Decreased stress
  • Feeling good and healthy over-all
  • Good control of glucose levels in the blood
  • Good maintenance of blood pressure
  • Improved emotional and mental capacity
  • Increased energy
  • Lowers risk of other diseases such as stroke or cancer
  • Stronger bones
  • Weight lose and muscle toning

If you have not been physically active for a while and would want to try a more aggressive exercise program, you must first consult with a doctor to ensure that your body will be able to handle this. You may be in need of it, but if your body, especially your heart, poses a high health risk, then it would not be wise to proceed without first getting the necessary screening like a stress test. But once the doctor has given you clearance, bear in mind the following to minimize any other risks when you do your exercises:

  • Those with type 2 diabetes should exercise at least three to four hours a week.
  • Walking, swimming, dancing, jogging and running are just some of the exercises you can do. You also work on your heart and lungs when you do these activities. Do the one you enjoy the most.
  • You may also go on a weight training program to turn your excess fat into muscle. Start with lower weights at least 2x-3x weekly and then build up when you’re sure your body can handle more.
  • Wear your diabetic bracelet or necklace every time you go to your exercise class.
  • Be in proper exercise gear and dress appropriately. Wearing the right footwear is important.
  • Stay motivated and remind yourself of all the benefits of good exercise.
  • Recognize when your body needs to rest. If you start feeling discomfort or pain, take a breather. If this should last longer, see your doctor immediately.

Exercise should really not be limited to those who have Type 2 or Type 1 diabetes. Even very healthy people can benefit from these exercise tips. However, a person with type 2 diabetes should know that diabetes and body fat particularly in the belly are intrinsically related. So go get into your exercise clothes and start living a healthy life.
