Most people who have diabetes have a problem looking at how to lead normal lives when they can’t even determine some of the Type 2 diabetes food that have been recommended for them by their doctors.

For many years, people avoided fat in their diet because of the possible health risks it can lead to. Fat has been blamed for heart and other health problems so much so that doctors have advised their patients to stay away from fatty food. Because of this, diabetics normally think that fat is the culprit so fat is definitely out in Type 2 diabetes nutrition.

Unfortunately, other health risks were not given the same amount of focus, such as eating large amounts of food rich in carbohydrates. And as obesity and diabetes become more and more prevalent today, many people have come to realize that too much carbohydrate in the body also poses the same dangers and risks as fat.

The truth is, those diagnosed with diabetes do not need to have a special diet. They can pretty much eat the same types of food like other people, except that they must be very aware of the carbohydrates their bodies take in.

Carbohydrates break down into sugar once it is digested into the body. Too much of this may cause a diabetic’s blood sugar to rise, so carbohydrate intake must be done in moderation. But meeting with a dietitian may still be in order primarily because a dietitian will be able to help you understand your eating habits and what Type 2 diabetes food you can include in your daily menu.

Your body needs three main nutrients, as they are very important to how your body functions and must therefore be always part of your meals. Here is a guide to the three important nutrients necessary to a diabetic’s blood sugar:

Carbohydrates – Carbohydrates is what gives energy to the body. It acts like a fuel that helps the body’s metabolism, which is important for the digestion of fat. You can get carbohydrates from the following sources:

  • Milk and dairy products
  • Starchy vegetables such as corn, green peas or potato
  • Breads, grains, cereal, rice, pasta
  • Starch snacks like chips, popcorn or crackers
  • Fruit and fruit juices
  • Dried beans or legumes
  • Sweets like ice cream and candy bars

When carbohydrates are digested into the body, in about an hour or so, it turns into sugar and travels to the blood stream. Diabetics can check their blood sugar two hours after meal time, to see if they have taken in the right amounts of carbohydrates for that particular meal.

Fat - Fat has vitamins A, D, E & K. It makes the food taste better and gives you that fuller feeling. We can get fat from food like:

  • Oils
  • Butter or margarine
  • Cream products
  • Olives and nuts
  • Fruits like avocado

What fat does is to inhibit digestion, so that nutrients will stay in the body longer. It stores energy in the body, which is good. However, if you have taken in more nutrients than required, like carbohydrates, then this will lead to something dangerous. A diabetic’s blood sugar may elevate within five hours after a meal, and this is something one should avoid from happening.

Protein - Protein nutrients is good for the repair of damaged tissues. It helps the body heal faster. We can get protein from:

  • Meat products --- beef, chicken, pork,
  • Fish
  • Dairy like cheese and eggs

Too much protein nutrients in the body can be dangerous because some of it converts to sugar.

To control the elevation of sugar better, diabetics should take note of this:

  • Breakfast is really very important. It helps your body’s metabolism faster.
  • Avoid skipping meals and if possible, take them at regular hour hours daily
  • Eat high fiber foods like fruits and vegetables.
  • Eat a balanced diet containing carbohydrates, fat and protein.

The general is that there is no specific Type 2 diabetes food to base your daily menu from but a good advice is to consider the effects of your food intake to your condition. It is best to choose foods that will help you regulate your illness and not make it worse than it already is.
